Former Indian captain, analyst, and commentator Sunil Gavaskar slammed the Indian fielders for their poor fielding efforts on the second day of the ongoing Headingley, Leeds Test against England.
Interestingly, Indian fielders dropped three valuable catches on Day 2 against England, which could’ve changed the game’s complexion. The first-ever drop came off Jasprit Bumrah's bowling when Ben Duckett nicked one to Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully in the fifth over.
Later in the seventh over, India's best fielder Ravindra Jadeja was on the receiving end off Bumrah's bowling, with Duckett getting another life at backward point. In the 31st over, Bumrah provided another chance with Jaiswal dropping Ollie Pope at the third slip.
Speaking about these three missed chances, Gavaskar slammed the Indian fielders, stating that fielding coach T Dilip should not give the Indian fielders any medal after the conclusion of the game.
"I don't think there will be any medal given. T Dillip gives those after a match. This is what was really very, very disappointing. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a very good fielder but he hasn't been able to hold on to anything this time," Sunil Gavaskar said after stumps on Day 2.
Moving into the details of the Leeds Test, India got bundled out for 471 runs in 113 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), and Rishabh Pant (134) were the star batters in the first innings. On the other hand, Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue scalped four wickets apiece.
In response, England scored 209/3 in 49 overs at stumps on Day 2. Ollie Pope is batting on 100* in 131 balls with 13 fours while Joe Root (28), Zak Crawley (4), and Ben Duckett (62) were back in the hut. Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah was the lone wicket-taker for Team India, scalping three important wickets.
