Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli recently made headlines due to his deteriorating health and financial struggles. Kambli, who represented India in 104 One Day Internationals and 17 Test matches, has been battling multiple health issues.
A childhood friend of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Kambli was admitted to Akruti Hospital in Thane on December 21, 2024, due to cramps and a urinary infection.
In addition to his health concerns, Kambli is also facing significant financial hardship. Stepping in to support him during this difficult period, former India cricketer and renowned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has pledged a monthly financial aid of INR 30,000.
Kambli’s wife, Andrea Hewitt, revealed in an interview with freelance journalist Suryanshi Pandey that she had initially filed for divorce in 2023 but reconsidered after witnessing her husband's vulnerable condition.
“I thought about leaving him, but I was always worried for his well-being,” she said. “He is like a child, and that hurts me. Even when I tried to walk away, I found myself concerned—had he eaten, was he resting properly, was he okay? Eventually, I realized he needed me.”
Sunil Gavaskar Fulfills His Promise of Support to Vinod Kambli
Sunil Gavaskar had previously promised to assist Kambli, stating that members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team would rally around their fellow cricketer in his time of need. True to his word, Gavaskar has extended financial support through the CHAMPS Foundation, an organization he is associated with which aids former international athletes facing hardships.
According to a report in the Times of India, beginning April 1, Kambli will receive INR 30,000 per month for the rest of his life. Additionally, the foundation will cover up to INR 30,000 annually for his medical expenses.
The two cricketers last met during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in January. Despite his frail condition and difficulty walking, Kambli touched Gavaskar’s feet as a gesture of gratitude.
