Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I captain, delivered an encouraging update on Shreyas Iyer on Tuesday, following media reports that he had been moved out of the intensive care unit.
Iyer was rushed to the hospital after suffering internal bleeding from the impact when taking a catch to eliminate Australia's Alex Carey in the third ODI game last Saturday in Sydney. Medical investigations found he had experienced a "laceration injury to the spleen."
Speaking to the media before the commencement of the five-match T20I series at Canberra's Manuka Oval, Suryakumar stated that he called Iyer as soon as he heard the news but received no response. He then called the team physio for an update.

The 35-year-old stated that Iyer is now able to respond and communicate with everyone, assuring Suryakumar that he is stable and healing. He did, however, add that because Iyer is still in a critical situation, the BCCI medical team will continue to monitor him over the next few days.
“The first day I got to know he was injured, I called him. Then I found out he didn't have his phone with him, so I called the physio, Kamlesh Jain. But I have been talking to him over the last two days. He has been replying. Agar woh reply kar raha hai (if he is able to reply over the phone), that means he is stable. It's looking good...the doctors are there already. They will keep him under observation for a few days. However, he has been replying and talking to everyone, which is good,” he said in the pre-match conference.
PTI sources also said that BCCI is arranging for Shreyas Iyer’s family members to fly down to Sydney and be at the side of their child. Iyer is not part of the upcoming five-match T20I series but will continue to remain in Sydney until he recovers.
