Indian skipper Shubman Gill was disappointed after India’s ODI series loss to New Zealand. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Gill felt India should have played better after clinching victory in the first ODI.

While India bagged a convincing four-wicket win in the first ODI, they went on to suffer a seven-wicket defeat in the second ODI. In the third and final ODI in Indore, India suffered a 41-run defeat to lose the series 1-2.

“After the first match, coming here 1-1, the way we played, a bit disappointed. Lots of areas that need some improvement. There are areas we need to look back, reflect and do better,” Gill said at the post-match presentation.

“The way Virat bhai is batting, that’s definitely a plus always,” he added.

“The way Harshit has batted in this series, batting at No. 8 is not easy, but the way he stepped up and the way our fast bowlers have bowled in this series has been pretty good,” he stated.

Furthermore, Gill revealed the key reason why the batting all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was given a total of eight overs to bowl while spinners could get only 12 overs combined. Reddy conceded 53 runs in his eight-over spell, without scalping a wicket.

“Keeping the World Cup in mind and where it’s going to be, we want to give him opportunities and we want to give him enough overs when he’s out there and just see what kind of combinations work for us and what kind of deliveries work for him as well, he noted.

In the third ODI, New Zealand batted first, posting a total of 337/8 in 50 overs. Middle-order batters Daryl Mitchell (137) and Glenn Phillips (106) were key for the visitors. In response, India scored only 296 runs in 46 overs before getting all out. Virat Kohli (124) was the wrecker-in-chief, but his knock went in vain.
