Australian middle-order batter Tim David entered the record books after smacking a 37-ball T20I century against West Indies in the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series at Warner Park, Basseterre in St Kitts on Saturday, July 26.
Moving into the details of the game, West Indies batted first and posted a dominating total of 214/4 in 20 overs, courtesy of Shai Hope's 102-run unbeaten knock off 57 balls with eight fours and six sixes.
However, in response, Australia looked in all sorts of trouble at 87/4 in 8.5 overs. Nevertheless, Tim David turned things upside down with a 37-ball 102-run unbeaten knock as Australia finished off the game in 16.1 overs with six wickets in hand.
Interestingly, David’s century knock had six fours and 11 gigantic sixes at an exceptional strike rate of 275.68 as Australia sealed the series 3-0 with two more games to go. During his stay at the crease, David took only 16 balls to reach his half-century, bettering the joint-Australian record held by Marcus Stonis and Travis Head with half-centuries in 17 balls.
While David took only 37 balls to reach his century, he broke Josh Inglis’ record of a 43-ball century against Scotland in Edinburgh in 2024. At the post-match press conference, David revealed that he has been using Andre Russell’s SS Ton willow.
“I’ve spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I’m working on my shot selection. I’ve been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like it was the best time to use it,” David said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I’m stoked,” David added.
