Top 5 expensive spells in IPL history

On Sunday, March 23, Sunrisers Hyderabad piled up a total of 286 runs for the loss of six wickets against Rajasthan Royals. It was the second-highest team total in IPL history. The match saw a spell from Jofra Archer, where he gave away 76 runs from his four overs.

It was the most expensive spell in IPL history. It was also the second time a bowler conceded more than 70 runs in an IPL game. Mohit Sharma gave away 73 runs from his four overs last year against Delhi Capitals. It was the most expensive spell until Archer went past him. Mohit was a part of Gujarat Titans last year. Coincidentally, Mohit is a part of DC’s squad for this edition of the league.

Before Mohit, Basil Thampi was at the top of this list. He gave away 70 runs from his four over against Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the 2018 edition of the tournament. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad that year.

Yash Dayal is fourth on this list for his bowling spell of none for 69 against Kolkata Knight Riders. It was the same game where Rinku Singh hit five consecutive sixes to take KKR home. KKR had required 29 runs to win the match in the final over bowled by Dayal.

Reece Topley is fifth on this list of the bowlers who have bowled the most expensive spells in IPL history. He played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023 and 2024. On April 15, 2024, RCB faced SRH in the 30th match of the season. SRH scored 287 runs for the loss of three wickets in 20 overs, the highest team total in IPL history. Topley gave away 68 runs from his four overs and bowled for RCB.
