The defending champions England have fallen on the verge of getting knocked out from the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 after facing the fourth defeat in the fifth match of their campaign in the tournament. England took on Sri Lanka in the 25th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the M Chinnawamy in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26.

England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to bat first; batting first, England had quite a bit good start in the beginning but just after the dismissal of Dawid Malan by former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews, the Three Lions faced a drastic collapse.

Eventually, England got bundled out on the score of just 156 runs in 33.2 overs, having only the knocks of 30 and 43 runs, played by Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, respectively. Sri Lankan bowlers completely dominated the English batters as Lahiru Kumara scalped 3 wickets at the cost of just 35 runs in his 7 overs. Other than him, Kasun Rajitha and Angelo Mathews also picked two wickets, alongside one wicket claimed by Maheesh Theekshana.

Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama chase target like 'cake-walk' for Sri Lanka

While chasing the target, Sri Lanka faced two early blows as they lost the wickets of Kusal Perera and skipper Kusal Mendis just at the team’s total score of 23 runs in 5.2 overs. but then came an unbeaten and match-winning partnership of 137 runs for the third wicket between opener Pathum Nissanka and star number 4 batter Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Nissanka and Sadeera played the match-defining knocks of 77 and 65 runs, respectively to help Sri Lanka chase down the target in just 25.4 overs, scoring 160 runs for the loss of 2 wickets and winning the match by a massive margin of 8 wickets to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.

Now, Sri Lanka will face the shock of this edition ‘Afghanistan’ in the next match of their World Cup campaign at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Monday, October 30.
