Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma likely to play for India A against Australia: Reports

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s appearances on the field have been scarce ever since they retired from Test cricket and T20Is. They last donned the India jersey in March 2025 when India lifted the Champions Trophy. After that, during the Indian Premier League (IPL), they announced their respective retirements from Test cricket.

They are now next scheduled to play the ODI series against Australia in October. However, over the past month or so, several reports have surfaced about their retirement from the ODI format as well with reports suggesting the selectors are moving on from them, keeping an eye on the World Cup in 2027.

There have been suggestions of Shubman Gill taking over the ODI captaincy from Rohit as well on the Australia tour. Meanwhile, it has been reported that Rohit and Virat are likely to picked for India A to play against Australia A later this month.

When are three One-Day matches between India A and Australia A?

For the unversed, Australia A are scheduled to tour India later this month for two multi-day matches and three One-Dayers. The two multi-day matches will be played in Lucknow from September 16 to 26, while the One-Day series starts on September 30, with all matches scheduled to be played at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, both Kohli and Rohit are likely to be picked in the India A squad with Australia tour following soon.

Meanwhile, it is also understood that Kohli will travel to India this month to undergo a round of fitness assessments in Bengaluru at the Centre of Excellence. This report has surfaced after controversy around reports of Kohli giving his fitness test in London.

As for Kohli and Rohit’s appearance for India A, the series might turn out to be a massive bonus for fans who have been longing to watch their favourite players live for so long. The stands at the Green Park Stadium might fill for fun if the two superstars are indeed selected in the team.
