Virat Kohli gets gold medal for fielding effort

India beat Australia by six wickets in their opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023. It was a thrilling encounter with the Aussies who gave up a brilliant fight against the host nation on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Batting first, Pat Cummins led the side that struggled to score runs in a relatively slow pitch of Chennai. Jasprit Bumrah was the first one to strike as the ace star sent back Mitchell Marsh without scoring.

David Warner and Steve Smith stitched a partnership of 69 runs off 85 deliveries. But as soon as both the batters went back to the pavilion, no other batter could make runs and was webbed into the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Kuldeep Yadav. Jadeja picked three wickets with two of them being Smith and Labuschagne. The spinners picked 6 wickets out of 10. They could only make 199 runs before being bowled out.

Virat Kohli reaches new records

In the match, Virat Kohli achieved yet another milestone. He is one of the most athletic fielders in the world. Kohli took a brilliant catch at the start of the inning of Bumrah’s ball to dismiss Mitchell Marsh for a duck. The former India skipper was given a medal for being the best fielder of the match in Chennai.

Apart from that Kohli once again proved why he is the best batter of all time when it comes to chasing in pressure situations. India was 2/3 when Kohli and KL Rahul were in the middle. The two batters played carefully at the beginning rotating the strike and playing lesser dot balls. The 34-year-old made 85 runs off 116 balls and was eventually dismissed when India needed 30 odd runs. Rahul was unbeaten till the end as the batter scored 97 runs off 115 and finished the game off in style with a six. Kohli has the most runs in successful run-chase in ODI and the most runs for India in major white-ball tournaments.
