As the three-match ODI series between Australia and India draws near, everyone is excitedly anticipating Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's comeback to international cricket. In the midst of continuous rumours about the two players' futures and if they would participate in the 2027 World Cup, which will be staged in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, the series' first game will take place.
Since announcing their retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, speculation has been rife about the future of the two players. Following Rohit's dismissal as ODI skipper and Shubman Gill's replacement, the future of RoKo is in doubt as the rumour mills are working overtime.
On Friday, October 17, Australia's aggressive opener Travis Head referred to India's great Virat Kohli as the "greatest white-ball player," saying that his long-time teammate Rohit Sharma is "not far behind."
In a joint news conference with the visiting all-rounder, Axar Patel, he was asked about playing against them in the forthcoming three-match ODI series between Australia and India, which starts on Sunday in Perth. Given their ages, this is probably the final occasion that Kohli and Rohit will play for India in Australia. It is also the first time they have played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy.
When Australia's Travis Head and India's Axar Patel spoke to the media two days before the opening ODI at the Optus Stadium in Perth, the former made glowing remarks about Rohit and Virat. However, as Head mentioned that Rohit and Kohli might continue to play until the 2027 World Cup, he began to stare sheepishly at Axar. This was an interesting change of events.
“They have been awesome for India, I guess Axar can speak more highly about them than myself. But two quality players, two of the best white-ball players. Virat is probably the greatest white-ball player. Rohit is not that far behind,” Head told reporters.
“Someone who opens the batting. I have huge regard for what Rohit has been able to do. I am sure they will be missed at some stage, but I think they both are going until 2027 (looks at Axar Patel and the all-rounder smiles). They both are trying to get to the World Cup. It is great for the game that they are still playing,” he added.
