Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant could feature in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy after the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) added both players to Delhi’s probables list. Delhi will start their campaign against Andhra Pradesh in Alur on December 24.
Last week, senior team India batter Kohli informed the DDCA about his availability for the domestic one-day competition. There is still no clarity on the ODI future of both Kohli and Rohit Sharma, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Since both now play only ODIs, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that they must play domestic cricket if they want to stay in contention for India selection.
Last week, while speaking to The Indian Express, DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma said: “Virat Kohli has confirmed to the DDCA today that he will play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Though he has nothing to prove it shows that he still retains passion for the game. His recent hundred against South Africa shows he is still one of the best players in the world. Him playing the domestic tournament will be a motivation for the youngsters.”
Kohli’s last Vijay Hazare Trophy appearance was in 2010 for Delhi
Kohli has been in strong form with the bat. After two ducks in Australia, there were concerns, but he bounced back with an unbeaten 74 in the third ODI. He continued that form in the recent home ODI series against South Africa, which India won 2-1. He hit back-to-back centuries in the first two games and finished with an unbeaten 65 in the Vizag decider. He ended as Player of the Series with 302 runs in three innings at an average of 151.00.
During the post-match presentation, Kohli clearly claimed that the series was “the most satisfying” for him with the way he batted and performed. “Just playing the way I have this series has been the most satisfying for me. Feel really free in my mind, whole game is coming together nicely. I've tried to maintain my own standards and make an impact,” he said.
This form has taken him to second place in the latest ICC ODI batters’ rankings, while Rohit Sharma holds the top spot. Kohli’s last Vijay Hazare match for Delhi was on February 18, 2010, against Services.
