Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has backed Shubman Gill to lead the Indian team across the formats in the near future. However, he questioned the selection committee and the team management on changing the ODI captain ahead of the Australian tour.
Speaking in a recent interview, Manoj Tiwary asserted that while Rohit Sharma has been doing a commendable job as an ODI captain with two ICC title victories, the change at this moment looks disappointing.
“Look, there’s no rocket science in understanding this. From their statements, it’s quite clear, they don’t want different captains for different formats. That indirectly means they’re looking to make Shubman Gill the captain across all formats. But let’s keep that thought aside for a moment and ask, why make this change now? When you appoint someone as captain, the goal is to win matches and series. Rohit Sharma was already doing that consistently,” Tiwary told CricTracker.
Furthermore, Tiwary also felt that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might announce their retirements after the three-match Australian ODI series, which is set to conclude later this month.
“The team’s performance was solid, the results were coming, so what was the need for this change? After the kind of contribution both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have made for Indian cricket, if they’re being treated like this, it’s nothing short of disrespectful. I genuinely feel that very soon, both of them might decide to announce retirement, possibly after the Australia series,” he concluded.
For the unversed, Rohit Sharma has been sacked as the ODI captain, while Shubman Gill has replaced him. On the other hand, the three-match ODI series against Australia will serve as the comeback series for Rohit and Kohli in international cricket since the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.
