Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma to retire from ODIs?

In an interesting turn of events, the Indian veteran cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might bid adieu to international cricket after the conclusion of the three-match ODI series against Australia, as per the reports published on the Dainik Jagran website.

The report also mentioned that the duo has to compete in the premier domestic one-day tournament, Vijay Hazare Trophy, to be in contention for selection in the ODI team. Moreover, the think tank team isn’t looking at the duo for the mega event in 2027.

For the unversed, BCCI brought in a new rule for all cricketers to take part in domestic cricket after the poor outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Unfortunately, the duo failed to live up to expectations on their Ranji return and they later bid adieu to the longest format of the game.

"Team management is not considering both (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma) in the strategy for the 2027 World Cup. Both may have to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay in the ODI team. In such a case, due to this condition, both might announce before the Australia series that it will be their last series," the Dainik Jagran report read.

Delving into the details of the Australia tour, India is scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is in the white-ball series. The ODI series is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 19, and the T20I series will commence on Wednesday, October 29.

It’s worth noting that Team India is yet to compete in an ODI series after the successful completion of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which India went on to win after bagging a win against New Zealand in the grand finale in Dubai.

With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announcing their Test retirements ahead of the England tour and having already retired from T20Is after the T20 World Cup 2024, many Indian cricket fans are eagerly awaiting the duo’s comeback to the field.
