Virender Sehwag's critique of Ishan Kishan's decision during the IPL 2025 match between MI and SRH has certainly sparked discussions. Kishan's self-dismissal on the first ball of the third over, despite no appeal from the opposition and no contact with the ball, left many puzzled.
The event happened during Hyderabad's innings' first delivery in the third over. In spite of no protest from any Mumbai Indians player, Ishan left the field after failing to make enough contact on a leg-side length ball from Deepak Chahar.
Everyone was perplexed as to why Ishan decided to surrender his wicket without even waiting for a decision from the umpire, as subsequent replays showed that not a single part of his body, much less the bat, made contact with the ball. The umpire had also begun to signal a wide, changing his decision on seeing Kishan walking.
Virender Sehwag says Ishan Kishan should’ve waited for the umpire’s decision at least
Sehwag labeled it a "brain fade," emphasizing that Kishan should have waited for the umpire's decision or considered a DRS review. He humorously pointed out that umpires are paid to make such calls, so players should let them do their job.
“Many times, the mind fails to work at that moment. It was brain fade. Ruk toh jaa. Umpire bhi paise le rahe hai (Stop at least and wait for the umpire to make his decision. He is also charging some amount of money for his job)," Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz.
“Let him do his work. I could not understand this honesty. Had it been an edge, it would have been understandable because that would be in the spirit of the game. But it was neither out; the umpire was unsure and you started walking off all of a sudden," Sehwag said.
Ishan continued to struggle to make runs after reaching a hundred in the opening game of the Indian Premier League, and the wicket saw his dismal trend continue.
Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped to ninth place in the standings after losing their sixth IPL 2025 game and their sixth in eight games. However, MI's fourth consecutive tournament victory put them in third place.
