Afghanistan produced another historic day for their cricket fans with a second outstanding win in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. This time, they completely outmuscled Pakistan in the 22nd match of the tournament after registering a massive victory by 8 wickets to keep their hopes alive for the knockout round of the tournament.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bat first; batting first, the men in green scored 282 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Skipper Babar and opener Abdullah Shafique scored half-centuries, scoring 74 and 58 runs, respectively.
Apart from these two, Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed also scored 40 runs each, helping Pakistan to reach a decent total. Naveen-ul-Haq and Noor Ahmed claimed three and two wickets, respectively, alongside one wicket each picked by Mohammed Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai.
The top-order batting heroics guide Afghanistan to historic win
While chasing the target, the Afghan openers, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz stitched an outstanding partnership of 130 runs for the first wicket in 21.1 overs before the latter fell prey to Shaheen Afridi. But Gurbaz had done the damage already with an amazing knock of 65 runs off just 53 balls, hitting 9 fours and a six with the willow.
Following this, another opener Zadran stitched a crucial partnership of 60 runs for the second wicket with number three batter Rahmat Shah before the former got out at the individual score of 87 runs, with 10 fours.
Then came the time when Rahmat Shah started his brilliant batting show there in the middle, alongside skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi at the other end. Shah and Shahidi went unbeaten with match-defining knocks of 77 and 48 runs, respectively to help Afghanistan chase down the total in 49 overs, scoring 286 runs for the loss of 2 wickets and winning the match by a massive margin of 8 wickets to stay alive in the tournament.
