Watch: Ben Stokes sarcastically applauds KL Rahul as India wastes time on Day 4

England captain Ben Stokes was seen sarcastically applauding the Indian opening batter KL Rahul at the dying moments of the fourth day of the Lord’s Test as he and his partner Akash Deep were seen wasting time just before stumps.

Moving into the details of the incident, in the 17th over of the fourth innings, India’s nightwatchman Akash Deep and the England pacer Brydon Carse were seen involved in a war of words, with Rahul stepping in and sorting things out.

Interestingly, one delivery before this, the play was halted with Akash calling the Indian physio to receive a strapping on his right leg, which didn’t go down well with Stokes, who surprisingly walked towards the batter and jokingly clapped, recreating Shubman Gill’s Day 3 antics.

For the unversed, Gill was animated at England opener Zak Crawley on Day 3 for his time-wasting tactics at the dying moments of the third day’s play. While India wanted to bowl two overs with six minutes left, Crawley made sure they had to play only one over.

In the very next over, Stokes came onto bowl and on the fourth delivery of the 18th over, the English skipper cleaned up Akash Deep’s stumps as India ended Day 4 at 58/4 with 135 more runs required to win the game and take a 2-1 lead.

Prior to this, in the third innings, England could score only 192 runs before getting bundled out in 62.1 overs. While Joe Root (40) and Ben Stokes (33) looked decent enough on a tough batting wicket, Washington Sundar’s four-wicket haul turned the game upside down. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj scalped two wickets apiece while Akash Deep and Nitish Reddy pocketed one wicket each.
