In an unexpected line of events during the IPL 2024 Auction, a wrong bid attracted the eyeballs of the cricket fans. Furthermore, the video of this particular incident during the auction also went viral over social media as soon as it was shared by a user on X (formerly Twitter).
It all happened when the auctioneer Mallika Sagar introduced player number 237 in the accelerated auction; it was the time in the auction when the Punjab Kings were looking for uncapped Indian cricketers to be a part of their squad for the next edition of the tournament.
Meanwhile, player number 237, Shashank Singh was introduced by the auctioneer and Punjab Kings made a bid out of confusion, which they came to know later they had bid for the wrong player. subsequently, the PBKS owners, Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta went in a discussion and informed the auctioneer about this mistake from the Punjab Kings’ table.
"It was a wrong name? You don't want the player?" asked the auctioneer Mallika to PBKS camp after Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta asked for her attention.
"We are talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has come down. Player No. 236 and 237 both went to you." Mallika added later.
Later, Wadia tells Mallika about the wrong move from Punjab; however, it can’t change Mallika’s mind and she further proceeds to say, “I think the hammer has come down for 237 (Shashank) as well.”
Here’s a look at the video of the Punjab Kings buying the wrong player:
Fantastic scenes here as the notoriously inept Punjab Kings manage to not only purchase a player they didn’t want, (Shashank Singh), they also admit to this in front of literally everyone. Singh we can guess is sat at home wondering whether to show up in March. #IPLAuction #pbks pic.twitter.com/PtLQv9t07H

It is also being considered as an incident of mistaken identity because two players with the same name “Shashank Singh” were registered in the list of 333 players in the Indian Premier League 2024 auction. The one bought by Punjab Kings is the 32-year-old Chhattisgarh batter who was released from SRH after a dismal run last year.
The other Shashank Singh is a U-19 uncapped Indian player who hasn’t made his debut in First-Class cricket so far.
