In a shocking turnaround of events at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi during the ODI World Cup 2023’s 38th match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the former Sri Lankan skipper and veteran all-rounder, Angelo Mathews was given ‘timed out’ by the umpire following an appeal from the Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

However, Angelo Mathews had entered and got his guard at the crease before the 3 minutes were over (the time required to calculate in case of time out if the batter makes a delay to come into the bat) but he just got to know about the broken helmet and gave an indication to Sri Lanka dugout. But still, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan opted to appeal for the ‘timed out’ to the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus.

Subsequently, Mathews was declared ‘timed out’ and he had to go back to the dressing without even facing a single ball. While heading back to the dugout, the veteran all-rounder was visibly frustrated over his dismissal. In the same line of events, he also threw his helmet just after he crossed the boundary line.

The video of this particular historic and shocking incident in the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka clash is also making rounds on social media as soon it was shared by a few users over X (formerly Twitter).

A majority of cricket fans have come up with brutal criticism of Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan despite knowing that Mathews was there in the middle of the given time before he went on to exchange the broken helmet with a new one.

When Mathews was declared out by the umpire, it was Sri Lanka’s 5th wicket loss on the score of 135 runs. However, they recovered strongly with a 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva before the latter got out at the individual score of 34 runs. Sri Lanka have scored 226 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 41 overs.
