We should have selectors who have retired recently from playing top-flight cricket: Ajinkya Rahane

Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has stated that players shouldn’t be scared of the selection committee. He also asserted that someone who retired recently should only take up the roles of domestic cricket selection.

Speaking on Cheteshwar Pujara’s YouTube channel, Rahane shared his views on the selection committee’s shake-up, especially on the domestic level. He also reckoned that state teams should have selectors who have retired recently from playing top-flight cricket.

"Players should not be scared of selectors. I want to talk about selectors, especially in domestic cricket. We should have selectors who have retired recently from playing top-flight cricket, those who have retired five-six years, seven-eight years ago," Rahane said while speaking as a guest on Pujara’s YouTube channel.

Furthermore, Rahane also asserted that the selection committee should have the mentality and mindset that matches up with the current trends of the game of cricket, as the game continues to evolve every day. 

"Because the way cricket is evolving, I think it's very important that the mentality and mindset of the selectors match that and keep pace with the change. The game is evolving. We don't want to make decisions based on how cricket was played 20-30 years ago. With formats like T20 and the IPL, it's important to understand the style of modern cricket players,” he stated.

For the unversed, the current BCCI rule states that potential selectors must wait until at least 5 years after their retirement from the game to apply for the role of a selector. Interestingly, Rahane last played professional cricket in the IPL 2025 season.

Speaking about his stats, Rahane has played 85 Tests, scoring 5077 runs at an average of 38.46. In 90 ODIs, he has accumulated 2962 runs at an average of 35.26. In 20 T20Is, he has racked up 375 runs at an average of 20.83.
