Former Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin has strolled down memory lane to reveal a hilarious incident involving the then stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in one of the practice games in Sydney, Australia.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated that an undisclosed fielder got hit at the short-leg when Nic Maddinson was sweeping off his bowling. However, after the fielder got on-field treatment, he requested Rahane if he could leave the field. However, Rahane asked the fielder to wear the helmet and continue fielding.

"We were playing a practice game in Sydney. Jinks was the captain. The wicket was bad there and I was bowling on the second day I guess. Nic Maddinson was sweeping me and he got an inside edge and the ball kissed on the shin of the short-leg fielder. It was paining a lot and the player got treatment and all. Later, he came and asked Jinks if he could go out for a while. He told wear the helmet and stand again at your position. I felt there is no captain like him and that was a very funny incident," Ravi Ashwin said on 'Ash Ki Baat' on his YouTube channel.

Notably, Pant has been announced as the captain for the second and final Test against South Africa, which started on Saturday, November 22, in Guwahati, in Shubman Gill’s absence as he has been ruled out of the game due to a neck spasm.

In the same video, Ashwin went on to highlight a quality of Rahane, the then stand-in captain, that he feels Pant should bring in in the second Test. Interestingly, this will be the first time Pant will lead the Indian team in the longest format of the game.

"What standouts when a stand-in captain comes in is to have a collaborative approach. And I feel Rahane's personality made that very easy. Many times as a bowler, it felt like this is our team. This approach will work because KL is there, Jadeja is there, Bumrah is there," he concluded.
