West Indies appoints Roston Chase as new Test captain

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed the 33-year-old all-rounder Roston Chase as the new skipper of the Test team. Interestingly, Chase is returning to this particular format after the gap of two years.

He will be leading the West Indies Test team in the three-match home series against Australia from June 25 at Bridgetown, Barbados, which will be his 50th Test. This decision was taken after Kraigg Brathwaite announced his resignation in March.

Chase was selected as the Test team captain ahead of John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican, who has been picked as vice-captain. CWI stated that the selection process was one of their most comprehensive and forward-thinking, involving psychometric testing and an assessment of leadership style, behaviour, and suitability.

"This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken. I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket," CWI president Kishore Shallow said.

Former West Indies skipper and current head coach Daren Sammy was also delighted by the approach to choosing the team's leader.

"I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him, we're building something special,” Sammy stated.

It’s important to note that Roston Chase previously led the West Indies in one ODI and a T20I match. He has a Test career average of 48.53 from his 10 Test games with three centuries. However, his form witnessed a dip as he averaged only 26.33, scoring 2265 runs and scalping 85 wickets with his off-spin.
