Durban’s Super Giants took on Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the 5th match of the ongoing SA20 2024 at St. George’s Park on Saturday, January 13 2024. DSG skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to bat first; batting first, the opening pair of Matthew Breetzke and Quinton de Kock stitched a good partnership of 58 runs for the first wicket.
Breetzke scored 43 runs off just 29 balls, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes; apart from this, JJ Smuts and Nicholas Pooran also smashed brilliant half-centuries, scoring 75 and 60 runs off just 38 and 31 balls, respectively. Daniel Worrrall picked two wickets for the Easter Cape, alongside one wicket picked by Marco Jansen.
DSG bowlers push the Eastern Cape away from the target
While chasing the target, the Sunrisers couldn’t cross the line as they were restricted to the score of runs for the loss of wickets in the entire 20 overs.
Tom Abell and Tristan Stubbs scored half-centuries but they couldn’t help Sunrisers Eastern Cape to chase down the target. Tom Abell scored 65 runs off just 36 balls, with 7 fours and 2 sixes followed by Stubbs’ 58 runs off just 27 balls, hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes.
The star with the bat for DSG in the first innings, JJ Smuts also picked two crucial wickets with the ball. Besides him, Richard Gleeson and Dwaine Pretorius also scalped two wickets each, alongside one wicket each picked by Reece Topley and skipper Keshav Maharaj.
Eventually, DSG won the match by 35 runs and registered their second consecutive win in the tournament, with JJ Smuts winning the ‘Player of the Match award for his match-winning all-round performance both with the bat and the ball.
Keshav Maharaj’s men have also moved to the top spot of the points table in the ongoing SA20 2024 with this second successive win.

The curse for the SunRisers is lose the first 2 games and start your actual campaign. But the first game we had, we got 2 points. We didn’t lose or win. We lost this game. But we have points on the table. Does that mean the curse still follows us or …? 😂 #SEC #SA20
