Former Australia cricketer David Warner was the most expensive player in the recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 draft. The draft was held in Lahore, and for the first time, players like Warner and Kane Williamson put their names into consideration for the draft.
The PSL runs on a draft system emphasizing equal talent allocation across teams. The PSL's highest pay grade, Platinum, has a top salary of USD 300,000 for the 2025 season.
Recognizing the need to remain competitive, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has upped player compensation in all categories beginning with the 2025 season. Players in the Platinum category, who previously earned between USD 130,000 and USD 170,000, can now get contracts of USD 220,000 to USD 300,000.
David Warner, who retired from all cricket in 2024, surprisingly went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He was released by his franchise, Delhi Capitals, and no one came forth to bid for him when his name came in the auction with a base price of INR 2 crores.
David Warner, 38, played 112 Tests, scoring 8786 runs with 26 centuries and a best score of 335* against Pakistan. In 161 ODIs, Warner made 6932 runs with 22 centuries and a best of 179 with a strike rate of 97.26. He also played 110 T20Is, scoring 3277 runs with 1 century and 28 fifties with a best of 100*.
He was also part of Australia’s 2015 World Cup-winning team and won the WTC 2023 title as well.
He was one of the top-performing foreign batters in the IPL, with 6565 runs in 184 matches with 4 centuries and 62 fifties with a best of 126 and a strike rate of 139.77. Warner won the IPL title in 2016 as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
After being snubbed from the IPL mega auction in 2025, Warner entered the Pakistan Super League 2025 draft. He was part of the platinum slab in the PSL 2025, and when his name came up for being drafted, Karachi Kings went for him and secured his services for USD 300,000.
This USD 300,000 bid from Karachi Kings made David Warner the most expensive player drafted in the history of PSL drafts.
The signing of David Warner by the Karachi Kings was a deliberate move because the Australian opener is a recognized threatening boundary hitter and match-winner. With Warner as the opener, the Karachi Kings suddenly boast one of the tournament's most destructive and fearsome batting teams.
