Mithun Manhas, the former Delhi captain, is set to become the first uncapped Indian cricketer to serve as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). On Saturday, the 45-year-old unexpectedly emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the board.

According to The Indian Express, the development surfaced during a prolonged and heated discussion among the BCCI administration in New Delhi.

The selections will be finalized on September 28, with nominations closing on Sunday. However, there has been no opposition to the choice of BCCI president in the past five years. In previous instances, the Indian board has often preferred a former cricket star, such as Roger Binny or Sourav Ganguly, to lead the body.

All you need to know about Mithun Manhas

One could say that Manhas ranks among the unluckiest players. The 45-year-old made his professional debut for Delhi in the 1997–98 season. With stalwarts like Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar in the mix, Manhas was unfortunate never to break into the Indian squad. However, he did manage to carve out a strong reputation in domestic cricket.

Manhas captained the Delhi team when Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were mostly away on national duty. Notably, during his early years in domestic cricket, a young Virat Kohli also played under his leadership.

His finest season came in 2007–08, when he guided Delhi to a Ranji Trophy triumph, ending their long title drought. That year, Manhas amassed 921 runs at an average of 57.56. In 2015, he shifted from Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the next Ranji Trophy season, returning to his place of birth.

He participated in 157 first-class games and amassed 9714 runs, including 27 hundreds, during that time. In addition, he has participated in 91 T20 matches for Delhi, scoring 1170 runs, and 130 List A games, scoring 4126 runs. Manhas’s highest FC score was 205*, while his List-A best score was 148. In T20s, he managed only one fifty, with the highest score of 52.

Manhas’s biggest recognition came through his stint in the Indian Premier League, where he featured in 55 matches between 2008 and 2014. He began his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), playing the first three seasons for them. In 2009, he scored 75 runs in 10 games, followed by 157 runs in 9 games during the 2010 edition.

He later joined Pune Warriors, representing them across three seasons and scoring 114, 120, and 13 runs, respectively. His final IPL appearance came in 2013 with Chennai Super Kings, where he managed 35 runs in 12 matches.
