Mumbai Indians bagged a 20-run win over the Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator of the IPL 2025 season at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh on Friday, May 30.
Moving into the details of the game, MI batted first and posted an impressive total of 228/5 in 20 overs. Rohit Sharma was the wrecker-in-chief, scoring 81 runs in 50 balls with nine fours and four sixes.
In response, Gujarat Titans could score only 208/6 in 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan was exceptional with his 80-run knock off 49 balls with 10 fours and a six. Trent Boult scalped two important wickets to turn the game upside down.
On that note, let’s take a look at who said what after GT vs MI, Eliminator.
MI captain Hardik Pandya
“At one point of time the game was even-stevens. I thought the wicket got better in the second innings. It started to come on well, they got into rhythm and we realised we need to hold our nerves and back our boys. The way Jonny batted and started.. for him to make his debut for us, it's a special franchise, coming in and playing the way he played. The way Ro batted. He took his time and once he got into rhythm, it was beautiful.
The way Gleeson bowled. Jassi being Jassi. Ashwani.. everyone chipped in well and we held our nerves. I would've liked a couple more (big hits). The little margins help. We wanted to push in batting and I think we were able to do that. (When to bowl Bumrah?) It's very simple. Whenever you think the game is going away, just bring him (Bumrah).
When you have that it's a luxury. It's like Mumbai housing prices - he's that expensive. I was just watching the scoreboard and I thought if we can keep extra runs at the end, I had the bowlers to bowl it. It was important that Jassi comes and bowls that over so that the margin becomes longer (the 18th over). Very important to recover well. Looking forward to the next game.”
GT captain Shubman Gill
“Brilliant game of cricket, we were right in it. Last three-four overs didn't go our way but it was still a good game. Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. Wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and doesn't help when you drop 3 catches.
Message was simple (for Sai and Washington). Just play the game you want to play and the goal was the same for both of them to make us win. Because of the dew, the wicket became a little easier for us. Definitely a lot of positives for us. Last 2-3 games didn't go our way but credit to all the players, especially Sai - he was terrific for us this season. 210 would've been par for us on this pitch.”
Player of the match Rohit Sharma
I have got only four fifties. Would have loved to score more fifties. Good day for us as a team. I do understand the importance of playing this Eliminator and going through this and taking the next step forward. Really proud of a complete team effort. When I play the game, I try to do my best keeping everything aside.
Making sure how I can do the job for the team. I had to make the most of the luck. I am glad I could do that. Get the team into a good position. It was going to be challenging with the dew coming. The bowlers held their nerves really well. To be honest, I have played those shots before in the tournament and found fielders.
Somewhere down the line you got to be lucky and today was that day for me. I got lucky as those catches were dropped. But even after that you got to play. I was focussing on keeping the momentum and tempo going. Was a good bowling effort.
Jonny, I have watched him over the years from the other side. We know the quality he has. I have a lot of experience playing in this format. Never looked like he was playing the first game. We got the start and capitalized on it.
