India suffered a 41-run win over New Zealand in the third and final ODI of the three-match series at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, January 18.
Delving into the details of the third ODI, New Zealand was entrusted to bat first after losing the toss. Middle-order batters Daryl Mitchell (137) and Glenn Phillips (106) were the star players as the visitors posted 337/8 in 50 overs.
In response, India scored only 296 runs in 46 overs before getting all out. Virat Kohli (124), Nitish Reddy (53), and Harshit Rana (52) were the top batters, but they failed to take India over the line. New Zealand pacers Zakary Foulkes and Kristian Clarke scalped three wickets apiece.
On that note, let’s take a look at who said what after India vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI.
Player of the match and Player of the series, Daryl Mitchell
It's really nice, to contribute to the team and to a win over here in India is very special for our group. As a group, the way with the bat that we built partnerships, with Will Young at the start and then with Glenn Phillips comes in and does what GP does (Glenn Phillips), it's pretty special. It's really nice to be out there with your mates and getting stuck in the moment and nice to get across the line.
I'm just trying to concentrate on being really present, I'm trying to watch the ball and repeat that over and over again and hopefully make some good decisions along the way. And it's nice to have some success. GP's a good mate and it's awesome to see him get a hundred as well. Partnerships are something we pride ourselves on as a group.
To do that with GP, who's obviously been out injured for a long time as well, so just really proud how he's come back into what he's doing. I love playing for my country and it took a little while to get here, but I look at all those years. Domestic cricket allowed me to learn my game and then work out how I want to go about it once I got the silver fern on my chest. Just really proud to be part of this group and it's pretty cool.
Indian captain, Shubman Gill
After the first match, coming here 1-1, the way we played - a bit disappointed. Lot of areas that need some improvement. There are areas we need to look back, reflect and do better. (On the positives).
The way Virat bhai is batting, that's definitely a plus always. The way Harshit has batted in this series, batting at No. 8, it's not easy, but the way he stepped up and the way our fast bowlers have bowled in this series has been pretty good. Keeping the World Cup in mind and where it's going to be,, we want to give him (Nitish Kumar Reddy) opportunities and we want to give him enough overs when he's out there and just see what kind of combinations work for us and what kind of deliveries work for him as well.
New Zealand captain, Michael Bracewell
It's always a pleasure to come over here and play in India in front of these amazing fans and play such a great team. So to be able to come over here and win a series the first time a New Zealand team's done it was pretty special. You're always hopeful when you're going to come over here and play some good cricket. As a group, we really stuck to what we know works as a team and it's been outstanding to be able to do that and test ourselves in foreign conditions.
(On New Zealand cricket) We're the sum of all the parts of the team and we really try to work together as a group. That's part of the Kiwi way, we're just a small country from the bottom of the world and we try to work together to take on some of the bigger countries in the world. We really rally around as a group and when things come like that, it's pretty special.
(On Mitchell) He's been amazing in the one-day format for a few years now. He's done beautifully and led the batting attack. He's a pretty humble guy, so to see him go through his thing and get the reward he deserves is pretty special. Whenever you expose new people to international cricket, having three debutants on this tour, that's very cool. Getting to experience the crowds is a wonderful thing. I think particularly those debutants who have stepped up and done a great job for us, all three of them. So, that's been particularly pleasing on this tour. Growing the depth of cricket in New Zealand is awesome.
