Former Indian opening batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has opened up on his thoughts of considering Shubman Gill, the new Test captain, as India’s new ODI captain after witnessing his heroics on the England tour.
Notably, Gill led the Indian Test team to a series-leveling 2-2, while scoring 754 runs from 10 innings with three centuries and a double century. It’s important to note that Rohit Sharma is still India’s ODI captain. However, if selectors are looking at a new captain, Gavaskar feels Gill would be the right choice.
"Rohit and Kohli are available for ODIs. They haven't been selected as of yet. Those things will be up to the selection committee. When the ODI series against Australia or the West Indies gets underway, it will be the perfect time to go for the Gill if the selectors want," Gavaskar said after the Oval Test.
Furthermore, Gavaskar heaped praise on the Indian Test captain for his ‘don’t give up’ attitude throughout the five-match Test series against England, which helped India to level the series 2-2. Notably, he ended the series as the leading run-scorer, amassing 754 runs.
"He is one of the most well-liked players in the team. He is getting those hundreds. If he is not happy with a hundred, he will go for the double hundred. He will then look to get a triple hundred if he is not happy with a double hundred. He got to 269 (at Edgbaston). He was showing that he can't give up. He just wanted to be there and make sure that every run mattered," he added.
India is currently ranked third on the WTC points table with 28 points. They are currently behind Australia and Sri Lanka in the standings. On the other hand, England is at the fourth rank with 26 points.
