Delhi Capitals, the runners-up in the first two editions, will look to break their final hoodoo when they enter the Women’s Premier League 2025. The Capitals are set to kick off their WPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians in Baroda on February 15.
Meg Lanning-side finished at the top of the points table in the previous two seasons but suffered heartbreaks in the summit clashes. Delhi will enter their WPL 2025 after retaining most of their previous players and with new signings Sarah Bryce, the star Scottis batter and Niki Prasad, India’s U19 World Cup 2025 winning captain.
Once again, the Capitals will rely on their unmatched overseas stars for their bid for the titles and hope for match-winning performances from the following three stars in WPL 2025.
1. Jess Jonassen
The veteran Australian spinner has recently lost her place in the national team but her recent performances in the franchise league tournament make her one of the best bowlers in T20 cricket going into the WPL 2025.
The 32-year-old spin all-rounder was the joint-highest leading wicket-taker for Delhi in the 2024 edition with 11 wickets despite missing two games. Jonassesn recently took the highest 17 wickets and smashed 218 runs at an average of 43.60 to lead the Brisbane Heat to the WBBL final.
2. Meg Lanning
The only captain to lead her team to two WPL finals will be looking to end Delhi Capitals’ wait for the title in 2025. Apart from her leadership skills, Meg Lanning has been the consistent run-getter in WPL history with a record 676 runs in 18 innings at a strike rate of 130.75 and with the highest six fifties.
The former Australian opener was the leading run-scorer in the first WPL edition and scored the second-highest 331 runs in the WPL 2024. Lanning struggled for the runs in the WBBL but has recently returned to form with two big fifties in Australia’s domestic 50-over tournament. Delhi will be looking for positive starts from Lanning once again, which has been their base for reaching the two consecutive WPL finals.
3. Annabel Sutherland
No other player is dominating cricket in all three formats like Annabel Sutherland right now. The Australian all-rounder has enjoyed a stunning 2024-25 season and will look to make her mark in the WPL 2025 after disappointing first two editions.
The 23-year-old represented Gujarat Giants in WPL 2023 and arrived at the Capitals as the joint-most expensive player in the 2024 auction. However, the batting all-rounder produced just 27 runs and one wicket in four games last season as she struggled for the consistency to cement her regular place in the playing eleven.
But ahead of WPL 2025, she is Australia’s highest-ranked T20 all-rounder with much-improved performances with the ball in the last few months. Sutherland recently wrapped up the Women’s Ashes with a big century in Melbourne and will be eager to carry her red-hot form in the WPL 2025.
