WPL 2025: 3 Key players for Mumbai Indians (MI)

The Women’s Premier League 2025 is just days away from the blockbuster opening at a newly built BCA Stadium in Baroda and once again the focus will be on title favourites Mumbai Indians. The inaugural edition winners will begin their WPL 2025 campaign against Delhi Capitals on February 15.

Compared to their opponents, Mumbai boast the strongest team on paper with some of the biggest T20 stars in their ranks. Mumbai also look very well balanced with each position covered with quality backup options. Ahead of the WPL 2025, we shortlist the following three players who can make a considerable impact for Mumbai Indians in their bid for the second title.

1. Amelia Kerr

New Zealand star has established herself as one of the biggest superstars in T20 cricket over the years and will be entering the WPL 2025 with stunning form. Amelia Kerr was snapped by Mumbai Indians in an inaugural edition and the spin all-rounder proved her worth with remarkable performances with both bat and ball in the first two seasons.

The 24-year-old Kerr recently played a huge role in New Zealand's triumph in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 where she clinched the Player of the Tournament award for scoring 135 runs and taking the highest 15 wickets. Kerr’s heroics in the 2024-25 season continued as she lit up the recently concluded Super Smash season with a record 441 runs and 15 wickets in just 12 games for the Wellington side.

Kerr, ranked 2nd in the ICC Women’s T20 all-rounder rankings, also enjoyed two very successful seasons in the first two editions of the Women’s Premier League. She dominated the opening season with 149 runs and 15 wickets to guide Mumbai Indians to glory and also made an impact in the 2023 season with 215 runs and 7 wickets.

2. Hayley Matthews 

West Indies captain has been dominating the ICC T20 all-rounder rankings for the last couple of years to emerge as one of the modern-day greats. Hayley Matthews, the player of the tournament in WPL 2023, will arrive in the 2025 edition as undoubtedly the most impactful player not just for Mumbai camp but in the entire league.

Hayley was snapped by Mumbai for her base price of just Rs 40 lakh but her performances proved invaluable. She scored 271 runs and clinched the highest 16 wickets in the WPL 2023 and continued her red-hot form in 2024 as well. 

3. Nat Sciver-Brunt 

Nat Sciver-Brunt, Mumbai’s most expensive player in WPL history, has struggled for consistency across formats lately but her past performances in the tournament make her the biggest strength for any team. 

The English all-rounder was the leading run-getter with 332 runs for Mumbai in the 2023 title-winning campaign and the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets in 2024. The veteran batting all-rounder is the only player in WPL history with a double of 500-plus runs and 20-plus wickets.
