Delhi Capitals once again came agonizingly close to winning their maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title but faltered at the final hurdle for the third consecutive season. In a gripping final that mirrored the 2023 season, Mumbai Indians showcased their resilience and secured an eight-run victory to claim their second WPL title. This triumph reinforced Mumbai’s dominance in franchise cricket, marking their 11th title across global tournaments. Despite Delhi's consistent performances, their wait for silverware continued.
Winning the toss, Delhi Capitals elected to bowl first and immediately put Mumbai Indians under pressure by reducing them to 14/2. However, Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur (66 off 44) and Natalie Sciver-Brunt (30 off 28) staged a remarkable recovery, forming an 87-run partnership to stabilize the innings. Delhi’s disciplined bowling attack kept the scoring rate in check, and just when Mumbai looked set for a big finish, Jess Jonassen and Shikha Pandey picked up crucial wickets in the death overs. Despite the setbacks, Mumbai managed to post a competitive total of 149/7 in 20 overs.
Delhi Capitals fall short in another final
Chasing 150, Delhi Capitals suffered an early collapse, losing both openers within the first three overs and slumping to 22/2. Jemimah Rodrigues (30 off 21) and Marizanne Kapp (40 off 26) fought back with a gritty partnership that kept Delhi in the hunt. However, their dismissals at critical junctures swung the momentum back in Mumbai's favor. Niki Prasad (25 off 23) tried to take the game deep, but Mumbai’s disciplined bowling attack maintained control, restricting Delhi's boundaries in the death overs. As wickets continued to fall and the required run rate soared, Delhi finished at 141/9, falling short by eight runs once again.
