The International Cricket Council (ICC) hosts a top Test cricket competition every two years called the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The WTC, introduced in 2019, provides Test cricket, the game's longest and most traditional format, with context, competition, and international relevance.
2019–2021
The 2019 Ashes series marked the start of the first WTC competition. Matches were halted in March 2020 because of COVID-19. While some games were cancelled or postponed, others resumed in July 2020. Following the cancellation of Australia's series against South Africa, New Zealand became the first side to go to the final. India made it to the finals as well.
The Rose Bowl in Southampton hosted the final from June 18–23, 2021. New Zealand became the first WTC champions after winning on the reserve day, after rain interrupted play on two of the days.
2021–2023
The second WTC Final, which took place at The Oval in London from June 7–11, 2023, pitted Australia against India. With a commanding 469 in their opening innings, Australia dominated from the first day. Steve Smith's graceful 121 and Travis Head's amazing counterattacking knock of 163 set the tone for the game.
India gave a lacklustre answer. Even with Ajinkya Rahane's valiant 89, they were only able to muster 296. Australia set an ambitious target of 444 after declaring at 270/8 in their second innings. The Indian batting lineup was knocked out for 234 after faltering once more. Australia won by a commanding 209 runs.
2023–2025
After an extended wait for a major ICC trophy, South Africa made history in 2025 when they won their first ICC Test Championship title. At the renowned Lord's Cricket Ground, the Proteas faced Australia and calmly chased down a target of 282.
They achieved an unforgettable five-wicket triumph due to Aiden Markram's undefeated century and a solid partnership with captain Temba Bavuma. In addition to demonstrating their tenacity, this victory signalled the beginning of a new era in South African Test cricket. The Proteas finally won an ICC Trophy after 27 years, and Aiden Markram was named Player of the Match.
