Star Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer attracted the eyeballs of the cricket experts after his recent statement. Notably, Iyer opened up about how he is looking ahead to execute a positive approach in the upcoming five-match home Test series against England, starting with the first Test on Wednesday, January 24 next week.

Iyer will be there in a crucial role to provide stability to the Indian middle-order in this big Test assignment against England.

Meanwhile, Iyer’s mindset didn’t seem perfect to go down well with the former legendary South Africa batter and ex-skipper, AB de Villiers. The former Proteas great came up with a suggestion for the Indian batter, alongside providing an insight into the red-ball cricket.

“I love watching this guy play. He is geared to play in those England Test matches with a positive mindset. I don't think there is a lot correct in the statement that you're just going to play positive no matter what situation you are confronted with. That's not how Test cricket works. But he'll figure it out himself,” said De Villiers in a video on his YouTube Channel.

“You need to be able to adapt to certain situations” – AB de Villiers

Speaking of Iyer’s appearance in red-ball cricket at the highest level of the game, he was recently in action for India in the recently concluded two-match Test series against South Africa. However, he couldn’t impress with his batting performances in the Test series against South Africa, scoring only 41 runs in the four innings of the two matches he played.

Furthermore, AB de Villiers also reckoned that Iyer will understand the actual requirements and demands of red-ball cricket as he will get to play more matches in this format.

“I think mentally, you need to think positively. I'm going to come out here today. I'm going to play the match-winning innings. But Test cricket just doesn't allow you to bat positively for a whole day. That's the beauty of the game, you need to be able to adapt to certain situations and conditions. Sometimes you need to earn the right to play more attacking, and that's what Shreyas will certainly find out as he gets a bit more experience in Test cricket,” De Villiers said.
