The India National Cricket Team is closely monitoring the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is determined to give him every opportunity to recover and is willing to wait until the last possible moment, even if there is only a 1% chance of his participation in the tournament.

According to reports from the Times of India, Bumrah is set to begin his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The fast bowler recently underwent scans in Bengaluru, and his availability for the tournament will depend on how quickly he recovers. The BCCI has yet to make a final decision and is expected to closely monitor his progress before making a call.

BCCI is unwilling to rule out Bumrah yet

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s fitness, the BCCI has not ruled him out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With the deadline for squad submission set for February 12, the Indian selectors are racing against time to finalize their squad. However, they are prepared to take a calculated risk by keeping Bumrah in the squad, even if it means he misses the first few matches of the tournament.

A BCCI source revealed that the board is likely to adopt a similar approach to what they did with Hardik Pandya during the ICC World Cup 2023 when he suffered an injury. The source explained that the BCCI might also approach the Event Technical Committee at a later stage if they need a replacement for Bumrah.

"Even if there is a 1% chance, the BCCI is likely to wait. They did the same with Hardik Pandya as they waited for close to two weeks before getting Prasidh Krishna as a replacement. Even when Shubman Gill was down with dengue, they didn't have any thoughts of looking for a replacement.

Yes, those two incidents happened during the campaign, but the approach with Bumrah could well be no different. This is just the deadline to submit the squad and they could approach the Event Technical Committee at a later stage to seek a replacement if he fails to regain fitness," the source stated.

Bumrah sustained his injury during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. While captaining the team, he experienced back discomfort during the first innings and was limited to just 10 overs. The issue worsened, preventing him from bowling in the second innings, which significantly impacted India as they went on to lose the match.

Following this, Bumrah was ruled out of the three-match ODI series against England, which is currently underway. Initially, there was optimism that he might return for the final ODI, but he was ultimately ruled out of that match as well. At present, there is no clear confirmation on whether he will regain fitness in time for the Champions Trophy.

With just a few weeks left before the tournament, the BCCI’s medical team will continue to assess Bumrah’s condition. The Indian team management remains hopeful but is prepared to make a late call on his inclusion. If he fails to recover in time, the selectors may be forced to name a replacement before the tournament begins.
