Former Indian all-rounder and commentator Irfan Pathan has opened up on the Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management debate, bringing out Pat Cummins’ topic ahead of the Ashes.
Moving into the details, Australian skipper Cummins is expected to miss the forthcoming New Zealand white-ball tour and India vs Australia white-ball series to stay fit for the upcoming Ashes series against England later this year.
Speaking on the same, Irfan asserted that the workload management should be taken before the start of the series and not once the series starts. In Bumrah’s case, the Indian seamer managed his workload in the middle of the series and Cummins is expected to go all-out for the Ashes series win without missing any Ashes game.
"Jasprit Bumrah is a treasure for the Indian team. It’s important to take proper care of him, but once a series begins, the discussion around workload management should not be brought up. Thinking about workload management in the middle of a series will not yield the desired results. Pat Cummins, on the other hand, has already begun managing his workload. He will miss a few series in the lead-up to the Ashes. But once the Ashes begins, will Pat Cummins still manage his workload, or will he go all-out for the series?," Irfan told the media in an interaction with Sony Sports Network.
Notably, Bumrah could play only three out five Tests against England in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which India levelled the series by 2-2 after their six-run win over the hosts in the fifth and final Test at the Oval.
Bumrah will be next seen playing the Asia Cup 2025 campaign as the seamer has been selected in the 15-man squad for the showpiece event. He last played a T20I in June 2024 when India lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2024 after defeating South Africa in the final.
