Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has now been appointed as a member of the Cricket West Indies Board of Directors. The 2012 and 2016 World T20-winning captain will be acting as an independent non-member director. The decision to appoint him as a member was taken by CWI during a meeting held on Thursday, June 17. The 37-year-old is one of three appointed Independent Directors approved in the CWI Board of Directors’ meeting. All the appointed members will serve for the next two years. Sammy joins Trinidadian Attorney Debra Coryat-Patton and Jamaican Surgeon and University Administrator Akshai Mansingh, who were both re-appointed to serve a second term.
I am thrilled and thankful for the opportunity: Daren Sammy
Darren Sammy’s appointment to the CWI Board of Directors is because of the two fundamental principles that have guided CWI’s improvement strategy for the last two years. This includes increased utilization of regional technical expertise and the implementation of a Cricket First Policy. Thus, it is anticipated that Darren Sammy’s appointment will also add a fresh and more youthful perspective and a high level of updated cricket know-how to improve the existing expertise in the CWI Board room.
Earlier this year, Darren Sammy stepped aside from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team St Lucia Zouks. Instead, he decided to become a T20 cricket consultant and brand ambassador. The 37-year-old has not represented the Caribbean team since guiding them to glory in the T20 World Cup in India. He is also a Cricket Consultant for the St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Sammy is the first cricketer from St Lucia where a stadium has been named after him.
The former WI skipper is also the current head coach of Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Peshawar Zalmi. Darren Sammy is currently in Abu Dhabi, and his team Peshawar Zalmi is set to play the 2021 PSL final against the Multan Sultans. Earlier, Darren Sammy had captained Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League from 2017 until 2020. Then, however, he had to step down due to fitness. The all-rounder then agreed to a two-year head coaching contract for Peshawar Zalmi, a position he currently holds.
