David Warner has a strong desire to assume Australia's vacant white-ball captaincy, and Test captain Pat Cummins supports him. Cummins thinks it may be unrealistic for a fast bowler to assume the helm in all three formats. The board of directors of Cricket Australia is willing to review the lifetime leadership ban that was placed on Warner at the time for his involvement in the sandpaper scandal in 2018.

Aaron Finch, the outgoing one-day captain, has backed the opening batter to fill the void in the 50-over format. Additionally, there is a desire for CA to have a single leader overseeing both white-ball formats. After the World Cup in October, Finch's future in Twenty20 international cricket is still up in the air. He has retired from one-day cricket.

Warner is open to meeting with CA officials to discuss lifting a ban and has expressed his desire to take on a leadership role once more. "The man next to me is the key, he’s the Test captain. I’m sure he gets the first opportunity," Warner said as he stood beside Cummins at Kayo’s summer of cricket launch at the SCG.

"Any opportunity you get asked to captain, it’s a privilege. For my circumstances, that’s in Cricket Australia’s hands. I can only concentrate on what I have to do and that’s using the bat and trying to score as many runs as I can.

"My phone’s here . What’s done is done in the past. The good thing is there is a new board that has come along. I’m always happy to sit down and have a chat and talk about anything they need to talk about. I’m just happy, enjoying my cricket and putting my best foot forward for the team," he added.

Pat Cummins on ODI Captaincy

Cummins, meanwhile, was appointed as the Test captain in November last year and looms as another option for ODI captaincy. The 29-year-old wishes to maintain a balance of captaincy across formats. He also backed Warner to be the captain as he brings a lot of experience to the table.

"It’s not our decision to make but Davey is always a fantastic leader around the team. He makes my job as a captain very easy. I don’t know the first thing about batting so having guys like Davey there to look after that is great," he said.
