It was a great day for the Indian athletes across different sports. Mirabai Chanu also managed to win the first Gold medal for the Indian contingent. However, there were a few athletes who had a bad day and won't be participating anymore as they are out of the tournament. Also, one defending champion crashed out after losing to a lower-ranked opponent. This is one of the biggest upsets in the event so far.

Some of the medal contenders are still in the race and will carry the hopes. Without further ado, let's have a look at the results across different sports.

Weightlifting

Mirabai Chanu, the silver medalist in the Tokyo Olympics last year, secured gold in the 49kg category. This is India's first Gold Medal at the CWG 2022.

Earlier in the day, Sanket Sargar won silver in the 55kg category which was India's maiden medal in the ongoing event. Gururaja Poojary was the second athlete of the day to win a medal as he won bronze in the 61kg category. At the end of the day, Bindyarani Devi secured a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category.

Table Tennis

Indian men’s team beat Northern Ireland by 3-0 to finish at the top of their group with three wins out of three. The women’s team also won three out of three matches after the victory in their last group encounter by 3-0 against Guyana.

After this, the women's team played Malaysia in the quarter-final. After leading 3-2 at one point, Manika Batra lost to a lower-ranked Ying Ho to take the game into the decider where Reeth Tennison also lost to the same opponent. This was one of the major upsets of the tournament.

Hockey

India women's hockey team met Wales in their second Pool A clash. The team carried on with their winning momentum, having thrashed Ghana by 5-0 in their first game. India won by 3-1 against the European team.

Boxing

Mohammad Husammuddin won his pre-quarterfinal clash against South Africa's Amzolele Dyeyi. Lovlina Borgohain, on the other hand, met New Zealand's Ariane Nicholson in the Round of 16 of the 70kg category. The Indian made short work of her opponent and won the bout to advance to the next knockout.

Badminton

Indian team outclassed Sri Lanka by 5-0 to win their second clash in Group A of the Mixed Team event. They also smashed Australia 4-1 in their final Group Stage game.

Marathon

Nitender Singh Rawat recorded a time of 2:19:22 to finish 12th in the Men’s Marathon.

Swimming

Kushagra Rawat finished last in Men’s 200m freestyle with a time of 1:54.56. He finished 24th overall, thereby missing out on a place in the final. On the other hand, Srihari Nataraj finished seventh in the men’s 100m backstrokes final with a 51. 31s clock time.

Squash

Saurav Ghosal secured a 3-0 against Sri Lanka's Shamil Wakeel to cruise into the pre-quarters. Ramit Tandon, on the other hand, bowed out due to injury and his opponent got a walkover in the first round.

Joshna Chinappa sailed into the pre-quarters with a 3-0 win in the second round after getting a first-round bye. On the other hand, Sunayna Kuruvilla lost in the second round against Aifa Azman by 3-0. India’s youngest athlete Anahat Singh also lost by 3-0 to Emily Whitlock of Wales.

Cycling

Vishavjeet Singh and Dinesh Kumar finished 18th and 19th respectively in the men’s 4000m individual pursuit qualifying and are out of medal contention. David Beckham finished fourth in his Men’s Keiren first-round heat while Esow Alben finished third in his heat. Both made it into the repechage round. Both of them finished second in their respective repechage heats as well.

Gymnastics

India’s Ruthuja Nataraj and Pranati Nayak scored 46.250 and 43.500 to place 6th and 14th in the Women’s Team Final and Individual Qualification. The top 18 athletes would go on to qualify for the All-Around final.
