The West Bengal government has decided to upgrade the security cover for former Indian cricket team captain and former Indian Cricket Board president Sourav Ganguly to 'Z category', according to a senior official. This decision comes after the expiration of Ganguly's previous security cover, which was categorized as 'Y category'.
The official stated that the security upgrade was carried out following a review conducted as per the protocol. Under the new security arrangement, Ganguly will be protected by 8 to 10 police personnel. Previously, under the 'Y category', he had three policemen from the Special Branch and an equal number of law enforcers guarding his residence in Behala.
On Tuesday, representatives from the state secretariat met with officers from the Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar and the local police station at Ganguly's Behala office. The official mentioned that Ganguly, who is currently traveling with his team, the Delhi Capitals, will return to Kolkata on May 21 and will begin receiving the enhanced security cover from that day onwards.
It is worth noting that in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor C V Ananda Bose, Trinamool Congress MP and national secretary Abhishek Banerjee, ministers Firhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak, and BJP's West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar already enjoy either 'Z Plus' or 'Z' category security covers.
In other news, Ganguly is currently serving as the 'Director of Cricket' for the Delhi Capitals team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The Delhi Capitals are preparing to face the Punjab Kings in match no. 64 of the IPL 2023 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Wednesday.
On a different note, head coach Ricky Ponting, in an interview for the Delhi Capitals podcast, shared his perspective on his rivalry with Ganguly. Ponting mentioned that the rivalry between him and Steve Waugh, the former captain of Australia, had more intensity compared to his rivalry with Ganguly. However, he emphasized that he and Ganguly had a good relationship and worked together for the success of the Delhi Capitals franchise.
Ponting highlighted their joint focus on the team's objectives, regardless of their personal history. He acknowledged the importance of leaving the past behind and concentrating on working together towards a common direction to ensure the team's triumph.
