Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta has talked about the two prominent omissions from the Indian Squad. The Indian cricket board recently announced a 20-man team for the upcoming Sri Lanka series in July. As anticipated, the selection committee has picked a strong team. They have also announced Shikhar Dhawan as the captain for the series and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as his deputy. Deep Dasgupta feels Jaydev Unadkat and Rahul Tewatia should have been included in the team. Jaydev Unadkat impressed with his brilliant performance in the 2019-20 Ranji season. On the other hand, Rahul Tewatia has also performed well in the shorter formats for his domestic team Haryana.
Seeing five spinners in the Indian squad was surprising: Deep Dasgupta
Jaydev Unadkat finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy with 67 wickets from 10 matches. However, despite his brilliant performance in the domestic circuit, he was not included in the squad for the upcoming series. The 29-year-old has 327 wickets from 89 top-of-the-line matches at 23.21. Unadkat has been brilliant with the white ball during the T20s. In that, he has scalped 182 wickets from 150 games. In the four games he played for RR in the IPL 2021 last month, the pacer picked up a three-for against Delhi Capitals, which also won him the Match award.
Deep Dasgupta also stated that both Rahul and Unadkat should have been given a chance as they have been performing consistently well for their teams in the last two to three years. The 44-year-old felt sad for Unadkat as the Indian selection committee included Chetan Sakariya as the left-arm pace bowler in the squad. The young pacer from Gujarat has impressed everyone with his performance in the 14th season of the Indian Premier League. The RR bowler picked up seven wickets.
Dasgupta further ended the discussion by saying that he was surprised to see the selectors including five spinners in the squad out of 20 members. He felt that there was no need of naming so many spinners in the team. Team India will tour Sri Lanka in July, and both the teams will face each other in 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. All these matches are going to take place at the iconic R Premadasa Stadium.
