Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik has stated that he is open to leading KKR in the 14th IPL season if the need arises. On the other hand, England ODI skipper Eoin Morgan is likely to miss the second phase of IPL 2021. BCCI's announcement to conduct the 2nd phase of the IPL might see a number of overseas cricketers missing the tournament. The England Cricket Board (ECB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have already confirmed that they won't allow their players to participate in the league.
The teams that have English players in their squad will be hit hard once the tournament resumes in UAE. One such franchise is Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who will be without the services of their skipper, Eoin Morgan. The English batsman had taken over the charge of the team during IPL 2020. He has also led KKR in the first half of IPL 2021. However, England's hectic schedule for the rest of the year will see the star batsman miss the 2nd phase of the IPL.
Dinesh Karthik has led the team in IPL 2018, 2019, and the first half of 2020
Eoin Morgan's absence will see the two-time IPL champions having a new captain for the 2nd phase that will take place in UAE. With Pat Cummins also missing the tournament, there are chances that KKR might move back to former skipper Dinesh Karthik. Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has led the team in IPL 20218, 2019, and the first half of 2020. The Kolkata-based franchise struggled when Dinesh Karthik was leading the team. The team managed to qualify for the second round of IPL 2018, but they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2nd Qualifier. In 2019, Kolkata Knight Riders had crashed out from the league stage. Karthik then stepped down during IPL 2020 after the team won 4 games.
Dinesh Karthik had joined the Knight Riders for Rs 7.4 crore in IPL 2018 auction. Kolkata Knight Riders have had a worse start to their IPL 2021 campaign. After playing seven games, KKR could win only two games and lost six. As a result, they are presently struggling at the penultimate spot in the points table with just four points to their name. However, KKR's troubles will further increase as their skipper Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins, and Shakib al Hasan are not going to be a part of the remaining IPL 2021.
