Rohit Sharma was appointed to lead India in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa after BCCI sacked Virat Kohli as ODI captain. However, an untimely injury to Sharma meant that Rahul had to lead the side in the ODIs series. Under Rahul, India has lost all three matches on the tour, raising doubts about his leadership skills.
India lost the first two matches of the ODI series comprehensively and was criticized for their lack of energy on the field. Many experts have voiced their opinions on KL's captaincy, while some suggested he is not ready to lead the side yet.
Former Pakistani spinner, Dinesh Kaneria is the latest to join the conversation. On his YouTube channel, he said Kl Rahul lacks aggression. “There’s no intensity in KL Rahul’s captaincy. The team isn’t showing the same intensity. It’s early times for KL Rahul but Rohit Sharma should come back as captain. KL Rahul is not ready to lead the team," said Kaneria
The Indian opener has also been selected as the captain for the new Lucknow team. He was roped in for a whopping price of INR 17 crores. He is now the joint highest-paid player in the history of the Indian T20 League. Meanwhile, Rahul will get one final opportunity to prove his credentials as India captain in the final ODI against South Africa in Cape Town, set to be played on January 23.
India's next white-ball series will be against the West Indies from the first week of February and Rohit Sharma is likely to be back for the series. The three ODIs will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, while the three T20Is will be held at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
