Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar talked about Chris Gayle's poor performance in the ongoing 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. The Jamaican-born batsman scored 40 off 29 balls in the first game of the season. After that, he has managed to achieve figures of 10, 11, and 15 for PBKS. The KL Rahul-led franchise has managed to win only one game so far in the season. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar stated that Chris Gayle's situation is tricky. Punjab Kings cannot keep the batsman in the playing XI in every game if he is not scoring runs.

Ajit Agarkar understands that it might be hard to leave a player like Chris Gayle out of the line-up. However, he remains uncertain about how long the team management would persist with him, mainly at the twilight of his career.

Their problem is that Nicholas Pooran is not scoring runs either: Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar also pointed out that Nicholas Pooran not scoring runs is also a matter of concern for the Punjab Kings. Thus, it's tricky as to how long these two players survive in the playing XI without scoring significantly. The 43-year old conceded that Chris Gayle remains an automatic selection in the playing XI if he is fit and in form. The Mumbai-born former cricketer also reminded that Dawid Malan is also waiting as he hasn't featured in any of the games so far. However, Agarkar believes that KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings have to bat better collectively.

Punjab Kings lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by nine wickets after a below-par performance with the willow. The Orange Army will next play against defending champions Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians will conclude their Chennai leg of IPL 2021 with a battle against the Punjab Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. The two-time defending champions have a 50%-win record in Chennai in the ongoing 14th IPL season. Mumbai lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener but bounced back with wins against the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals defeated them in their last match. On the other hand, Punjab Kings will be keen to win the next game as they have three back to back games.
