Mohammed Shami's debut for the Gujarat team proved to be a fiery one as he rattled Lucknow's top order. His skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and asked Lucknow to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Shami bowled the first delivery of the game which turned out to be a peach. The right-arm pacer bowled a full delivery that kissed the outside edge of the bat of KL Rahul.

He and his team appealed but the umpire denied it. Skipper Pandya went for the review, which revealed that Rahul has hit the ball. The decision was overturned and Rahul registered his second duck of the ITL career. Notably, his first duck came against now-defunct Gujarat in 2016 while he was playing for Bangalore. His fiery bowling didn't stop here.

The Amroha-born pacer went to dismiss Quinton de Kock (7) with an inswinger and then managed to clean up Manish Pandey (6). His spell created problems for Lucknow as they finished 32/4 in the powerplay. His opening bowling partner Varun Aaron took the wicket off Evin Lewis (10) with a bouncer. Notably, Shubhman Gill took an outstanding catch.

The Men in Mint Green recovered from the spell as they finished at 158/6, thanks to some wonderful contributions from Deepak Hooda (55), ITL debutant Ayush Badoni (54), and Krunal Pandya (21*). Shami would have had a fourth wicket to his name had Lockie Ferguson held on to Badoni's catch. Meanwhile, Shami finished with the figures of four overs, 25 runs and three wickets.

Varun Aaron took the wicket of Badoni in the last over of the innings. He finished with the figures of 45 runs and two wickets in four overs.
