New Zealand senior pacer Tim Southee stated that dropping Rishabh Pant's catch was like dropping the ICC WTC title. Southee slipped an easy catch of Pant on the Reserve Day of the WTC final. The young wicketkeeper-batsman was batting on five when he edged a Kyle Jamieson delivery in the first session. Tim Southee who was standing at the second slip dropped the catch. The Indian cricket team was four down with 82 on the board, and Rishabh Pant was batting in the middle with Ajinkya Rahane.

Pant was India's highest scorer in the second innings

Rishabh Pant was India's highest scorer in the second innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 41 runs in 88 deliveries. This also included six boundaries. It was not enough, as team India folded for just 170 runs. New Zealand chased down the target of 139 runs easily.

New Zealand started their WTC campaign in 2019 with a six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka away from home. Tim Southee stated that at the time, they were just hoping that they can see themselves through to the end.

Rishabh Pant has also grown at a meteoric rate to fix his spot in the Indian cricket team. A few months back, the youngster was heavily criticized for his glovework. However, after the series against Australia, Rishabh Pant has improved massively in both departments. The 23-year-old has replaced India's former Test mainstay wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Saha had lost his place when he failed to perform against Australia earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team is currently on a three-week break. All the players are holidaying in different parts of the UK before they reassemble in the bubble on July 14 ahead of the India vs England Test series. The Indian team will next be seen in action during India's forthcoming five-Test series against England. England is going to host India for five Tests at Trent Bridge, Lord's, Emerald Headingley, the Kia Oval, and Emirates Old Trafford. The first game of the series will start on August 4. Joe Root-led team lost the away series in India 1-3. They also suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Kiwis earlier this month.
