India beat Ireland by seven wickets in the first T20I on Sunday. A brilliant bowling effort got India early breakthroughs, but they had to face the scare of Harry Tector, who got Ireland back in the game. India thereafter maintained a high scoring rate with the bat throughout the match to win comfortably.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first, but rain played a spoilt sport. The continuous clouds over The Village kept the game in doubt. However, the rain finally stopped, and the game was reduced to 12 overs a side.

The match began at 11:20 (IST) with Bhuvneswar Kumar taking the new ball. He took a wicket in his first over, and then Pandya followed it up with another in the second. Avesh Khan also got a wicket in his first over, and Ireland were in trouble at 22/3 in the first four overs.

Having lost their star player Paul Stirling (4), the hosts were in big trouble. However, Harry Tector pulled back things for the team. He played an attacking game to revive Ireland in the match. Lorcan Tucker (18) joined him in the attack, but he was dismissed in the ninth over by Yuzvendra Chahal. Meanwhile, Tector (64) kept attacking and reached his half-century in just 29 balls. He helped the team score 108 runs in the first innings.

In the chase, Deepak Hooda, surprisingly, was sent in to open along with Ishan Kishan. The latter got off to a fast start but soon lost his wicket. In the third over, he was out for a team score of 30. Craig Young followed it up by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav on the very next ball. In the powerplay, which was reduced to four overs, India scored 45 runs.

The Pandya-Hooda, however, kept the required run rate in check as kept scoring boundaries at regular intervals. They added 64 runs together before Pandya (24) was dismissed by Joshua Little in the eighth over. In the end, Hooda (47) and Dinesh Karthik (five) completed the game for India with 16 balls to spare.
