After Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, the Indian team has been jolted with another injury blow as Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the England tour due to a fractured finger. Sundar picked up the injury while playing for County XI against India in the warm-up game. The off-spinner was hit by a lethal delivery from Mohammed Siraj. A source close to the BCCI confirmed the development.
“Yes, Washy has a fractured finger just like Avesh who had a thumb dislocation. Both are out of Test series and will go home,” a senior BCCI official was quoted by My Khel.
The source further emphasized that Sundar’s injury will take at least five weeks to heal thus it is best for him to return back home. Both Sundar and Avesh Khan were unlikely to feature in the Test series but were an integral part of the contingent as net bowlers.
“It is sheer irony that both Avesh and Washington played for opposition and got hurt. But this is sport and injuries are part and parcel of life,” the source added.
The BCCI is yet to announce any replacements but several experts believe they might ask Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Navdeep Saini to join the squad in England. Bhuvneshwar is currently in Sri Lanka where he is serving as the vice-captain of the team. Saini, on the other hand, did not feature in the first two ODIs but is likely to don the Indian jersey for the final ODI on Friday considering that India have already won the series and might look to rest some of the players.
