ECB has recently confirmed that off-spinner Dominic Bess has been included in the team for the second Test against New Zealand. The game is going to be played from June 10 at Edgbaston. Considering the wicket in Birmingham is going to help spinners a lot, Jack Leach might be included in the playing XI. The hosts will add another spinner in the squad for the ultimate contest against the NZ to make things more fascinating.
Dom Bess is added to the team as a cover in case of injuries: Chris Silverwood
The addition of Dom Bess to the team came as a surprise for many. The hosts already have a spin option in the form of Jack Leach. However, England opted not to play spinners in the opening match as they decided to go with a complete pace bowling unit. Opining on the addition of Dom Bess to the team, England coach Chris Silverwood stated that he is included as a cover in case of injuries.
The 23-year-old is coming into the team after an impressive four-wicket haul in the ongoing county championship. His brilliant performance with the ball helped Yorkshire to an emphatic victory against Sussex. Dom Bess reached the team hotel on Sunday (June 6) evening. The spinner will now have to go through 48 hours of mandatory isolation. If Bess tests negative and all goes according to plan, he will train with the remaining team on Wednesday (June 9) before the second match that starts on June 10.
Dom Bess made his international debut against Pakistan back in the year 2018. The youngster has represented England in 14 Tests and picked up 36 wickets so far. His last match in the purest format of the game was against the Indian cricket team earlier this year in Ahmedabad. The spinner returned wicketless and also gave away 71 runs in his 17 overs quota. Meanwhile, the England cricket team has received severe criticism for not playing a spinner in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's. Even though captain Joe Root backed the management's decision to play four pacers, Dom Bess's inclusion in the team is a sign that they have learned from their mistake.
