Sri Lanka suffered a shock when skipper Dimuth Karunaratne was ruled out of the two Tests' first. The batsman sustained a fractured thumb. Stand-in-skipper Dinesh Chandimal scored 28 runs and put up a 56-run stand with Angelo Mathews. Mathews scored 27 runs before getting dismissed by Stuart Board. Mathews went past 6,000 Test runs during his knock.

In England's innings, the visitors lost early wickets, but Root and Bairstow guided the side to 127 for two. The England team is still trailing Sri Lanka by eight runs. Root and Bairstow then batted sensibly to bring up England's best partnership for all wickets at the venue.

Root and Bairstow's batting duo put on an unbeaten stand of 110 after the openers failed to perform. Lasith Embuldeniya dismissed Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley.

Joe Root scored his 50th half-century in 98 Test matches

The current England test skipper has 17 centuries in his name. Bess was the hero of the innings as he picked his second five-wicket haul in his 11th Test. The venue at Sri Lanka also witnessed its lowest first-innings score. The lowest score in the venue was Sri Lanka's 181 against Pakistan back in 2000.

The England side introduced spin in the 11th over and Bess in his second ball dismissed Kusal Perera for 20 runs. Sri Lanka had collapsed to 25 for three, but Mathews and Chandimal stood firm till lunch. The England cricket team were seen wearing black armbands in remembrance of former players John Edrich, Robin Jackman and Don Smith.
