There is a possibility that the England tour of Sri Lanka might get canceled owing to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the UK. Recently, there has been a tremendous surge in COVID-19 cases with news that a new, more infectious COVID -19 strain has taken its toll in the UK. The England side is set to leave for Sri Lanka on 2nd January. However, in light of the recent situation in the UK, things look bleak ahead.

Several European countries have isolated the UK, with many of them banning international flights to and from Britain. As per reports in the English media, the ECB has called for an emergency talk with Sri Lanka cricket. This is with regards to whether the serious should see a green light or not. With the UK in lockdown, it is highly likely that red light might be shown to the tour.

The tour was previously canceled in the month of March this year. It was then postponed to January 2021. As per the current program, England will fly to Sri Lanka on 2nd January. Prior to that, they will follow a 2-week program before the 1st test commences in Galle on 14th January.

The Sri Lankan government has stuck with strict measures regarding England’s visit to Sri Lanka. During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was called off during an ongoing practice match in Colombo. With fears surrounding the pandemic, the Sri Lankan government would not want to risk the welfare of the nation.
