Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel has made an observation about England batsmen. The Englishmen have a tendency to resort to sweeping shots against spinners. They do it irrespective of whether the ball is turning or not.
If the ball is bowled Stump to Stump, then it gets tough for the batsmen. Otherwise, if the one bowls outside off Stump or leg-Stump, the batsmen play the sweep shot. They play based on where the ball is pitched instead of judging the ball from the bowler's hand.
Axar Patel is one of the spinners who has been chosen for the England tour. Indian team would play in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand at Southampton. A five-test series against England is also scheduled after that.
Axar Patel had made an unforgettable Test debut against England earlier this year. He had claimed 27 wickets in three Tests. His average was 10.59 with four five-wicket hauls.
During the home series against England, Axar Patel picked up some wickets via bowled and lbw modes. The English batsmen were unable to defend themselves against his bowling attack.
Axar Patel was supposed to make his test debut in Chennai
Patel recalled the emotions that he went through during the first two tests. He was unable to play that match due to a knee injury. A day before his Test debut, he had a pain in his knees. The doctors were not sure of the cause. They suspected it was because he was bowling after a long time after the lockdown. He had it get his scan done. He felt blank and spoke with his parents for support. Two times before this, he had been injured before going to Mumbai. This was the third time. The scan report was blank and the doctors assured him that he can play in the next match.
Patel could make his debut in the second test. He had a 5 wicket haul in the second innings. India won that match by 317 runs. Although the series did not start in a positive way for him, he made an impressive Test debut later.
Axar Patel was a bit nervous before his test debut. He shared that before he made his debut, Virat Kohli assured him that he has nothing to prove. He was on the team because he has already proved himself as a player. That helped him clear his mind and play his best game.
After his memorable Test debut, Patel has picked up 11 wickets in the Ahmedabad day-night Test. He also picked up 9 wickets in the final Test of that series.
